All promovendi must order their own doctoral hat. The models of doctoral hats and the lyre emblems fastened to them vary according to academic field.
When ordering a hat, you will need to personally go to a hat maker, where the shape and the size of your head will be precisely measured. This is necessary because the hats are made to measure, and once formed, cannot be reshaped. For this reason, it is not possible only to submit one’s usual hat size when ordering the hat. If you are unable to visit a hat maker for personal measurements, each hat supplier has their own instructions for taking measurements. These can be obtained from the respective hat maker or as an attachment below.
All doctoral hats will be collected roughly one week prior to the conferral ceremony. You must put your name on your hat to avoid mix-ups. Follow the instructions given in the letters sent to you.
Because several universities hold their conferral ceremonies in the spring of 2025, be sure to order your doctoral hat well in advance!

Au-Holmberg collaborates with Hattuhuone in Tampere, where the doctoral hats are made. If you choose the package price for the hat and sword from Au-Holmberg, the procedure is as follows:
- Indicate your order for the sword through the registration for the Conferral Ceremony 2025.
- Order your hat via Au-Holmberg and mention that you have also ordered the sword through the university.
- The sword and hat will be invoiced to you personally by Au-Holmberg.
- The hat and sword will be delivered to the university in May prior to the conferral ceremony. Alternatively, the hat can be picked up personally earlier, while the sword will be delivered to the university.
A measurement session will be arranged on campus at Åbo Akademi at the beginning of 2025 (date, time, and location will be announced shortly).
