Åbo Akademi University granted right to educate Masters and Doctors of Law

Åbo Akademi University has been granted the right to run a law program from candidate to doctoral degree. This expanded law education will begin in 2023.

According to the plans, the master’s program in law at Åbo Akademi University will concentrate on two areas in particular: foreign trade and commercial law, as well as international law and human rights. These are already an important focus in teaching and research at Åbo Akademi University.

– The expanded education gives students more diverse opportunities and provides a better opportunity to meet regional needs. We are very happy about this reform, which everyone in the long run benefits from, and look forward to a good collaboration with the other universities. We look forward to building a strong legal competence environment with branches in many contexts, says Mikael Lindfelt, acting Rector of Åbo Akademi University.

Åbo Akademi University’s currently has the right to educate bachelors in the field of legal education, with the degree including a notary degree. To improve access to a continuous study program and to meet the need for Swedish-language legal competence in Finland, Åbo Akademi University applied for full educational rights in Law.

The extended right to education was granted by Antti Kurvinen, Minister of Science and Culture (Centre Party) on Monday January 10, 2022.
