Rector Mikael Lindfelt resigns

Mikael Lindfelt has today, 4 April 2025, announced that he will resign from his position as Rector of Åbo Akademi University.

The duties of Rector will be handled by Acting Rector Gunilla Widén during a transition period.

‘We would like to thank Mikael for his time as Rector at Åbo Akademi University. He has worked with commitment and determination. It is sad that he is now resigning, but we respect his decision. It has been a stressful time for many in different parts of our organization. The changes that are now taking place are demanding but necessary to put the academy’s operations on a long-term sustainable basis,’ says Dag Wallgren, Chair of Åbo Akademi University’s Board.

Acting Rector Gunilla Widén and Vice-rectors Marko Joas and Reko Leino will continue to lead the change process with regular discussions in different parts of the organization.

‘We are committed to ensuring that the reorganization proceeds according to plan. In academic activities, several of the new units have already started their planning, as have the administrative teams. I hope that together we can maintain a respectful and constructive spirit, to create peace of mind and move forward together in this work,’ says Wallgren.

The Board will decide on the timetable and recruitment process for a new Rector.
