School of Business and Economics at Åbo Akademi University launches micro-credentials – a new way to strengthen continuous learning
At a time when the labour market is changing rapidly, micro-credentials offer a flexible way to acquire new, relevant skills. The School of Business and Economics at Åbo Akademi University offers micro-credentials in Business Development, and a new study module The Business of Human Rights.
A micro-credential is a certificate that shows you have completed a short training course and had your knowledge evaluated in a clear and reliable way. These are short, standalone courses that certify you have specific skills and knowledge in a particular field.
Micro-credentials are offered by higher education institutions, universities or other public and private educational actors to enable students and professionals to acquire skills sought after in the labour market quickly and flexibly. It is a practical way of developing professionally for those who want to build on their knowledge alongside their full-time work.
In 2022, the EU adopted a recommendation on a European approach to micro-credentials.
“People in working life often need to refresh their knowledge and skills to keep up with developments. We want to offer shorter learning experiences that provide both tools and inspiration, and are also based on the latest research”, says Anna-Greta Nyström, Professor of Business Administration at the School of Business and Economics at Åbo Akademi University.
It is also possible to tailor micro-credential courses for external partners based on their specific training needs.
Pilot study provided positive experiences
Åbo Akademi University School of Business and Economics conducted a pilot study in 2022–2024 to explore how micro-credentials can be structured and integrated with formal university education. During the pilot, courses of 1–2 credits were offered in areas such as entrepreneurship, business development and a new study module “The Business of Human Rights”, which is a collaboration with the main subject of Public International Law at Åbo Akademi University.
“The Business of Human Rights deals with how companies can promote human rights in their operations.” The courses explore the interaction between companies, the state and individuals, and provide a deeper understanding of the responsibilities of companies, the rules under which they operate, and how human rights can become a self-evident part of a business strategy”, explains Viljam Engström, Senior University Lecturer in Public International Law at Åbo Akademi University.
The pilot courses were designed to be practical and relevant for people in working life. The project also included cooperation with companies and organisations to ensure that the training was tailored to meet current labour market needs.
“Based on the feedback we received, the participants particularly appreciated the shorter format and the multidisciplinary approach. In formal university education, courses comprise five credits and a workload of about 130 hours. Micro-credentials require less time. Multidisciplinarism is one of the great strengths of the study module, as it provides new perspectives on and insights into how others think about the same theme”, says Engström
