The new Åbo Akademi University strategy has been released

The new strategy for Åbo Akademi University has been published. The website where the strategy can be read lists the key areas we want to improve in the coming years, with particular responsibility for the Swedish-speaking community in Finland.

The strategy applies to the years 2025-2030 and sets ambitious targets in several basic areas of activity, such as research, education, multilingualism and international cooperation, sustainability and social responsibility.

“The Board has approved a strategy that is as ambitious as it is purposeful. We have serious challenges with regard to the sustainability of our activities. This strategy provides us with the tools to tackle these challenges. The Board sets the course and now it is up to us in the management to organise and systematically work towards the broad implementation of the strategy,” says Rector Mikael Lindfelt.

The Åbo Akademi University Board has listed nine concrete goals in the strategy. Among other things, by 2030, Åbo Akademi University will: have a clearly positive financial result; increase the percentage of degrees completed within the allotted time for studies; have at least two externally recognised centres of excellence in research and an additional eight long-term and strategic partnerships with credible partners. The focus of academic work shall remain on, among others, the freedom of thought, speech, teaching and research which, in turn, fosters active citizenship, education and critical thinking.

The strategy also emphasises the identity-creating work that defines the University’s language practices, recruiting requirements, training offering and our interpretations of our responsibility for the Swedish-speaking community in Finland.

“This is Åbo Akademi University’s most central regulatory document. The aim is to enhance the conditions for viable, quality education and research well into the 2030s. This presupposes priorities and choices that appear in the strategy’s vision and course. The strategy will serve as a regulatory document at all levels of the organisation, in all planning and development of activities. Measurably increasing the University’s cross-lingual attractiveness among students, researchers and experts, and clearly strengthening the financial conditions for development of activities are key objectives,” says Chairman of the Board Dag Wallgren.
