The Research Council of Finland funds ÅAU research on prostate cancer

Tan Phat Huynh, Associate Professor in Technologies for a Sustainable Future at Åbo Akademi University, has been awarded €246,856 by The Research Council of Finland for a project to further develop and improve prostate cancer diagnostics.

Prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are common and significant health issues among older men. Current diagnostic methods are invasive and often lack specificity, leading to unnecessary biopsies.

This project aims to develop a non-invasive diagnostic method using 1H-NMR metabolomics and machine learning to distinguish between urine samples from patients with PCa and BPH. If successful, it could revolutionize prostate diagnostics by providing a reliable and cost-effective alternative. The results are expected to lead to a method that can be used for diagnosing other types of cancer.
