Food webs are the backbones of healthy ecosystems providing sustainable goods and services to humans. Their function is essential for maintaining flow of energy and matter, healthy populations and interactions of fish, seabirds and marine mammals, as well as for ecosystem buffering capacity of anthropogenic impacts. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the revised EU Common Fisheries Policy consequently call for better integration of food web characteristics in the assessment and management of biological resources. BONUS XWEBS is a synthesis project, both looking backwards, by reviewing what has been achieved by BONUS research activities in the past, and looking forward by proposing ways to fill the remaining key knowledge gaps. The objective is to provide a vision of where to go in the future to facilitate an efficient Baltic food web research framework, including improved knowledge transfer to management. Jointly, this can help ensuring Good Environmental Status (GES) and sustainable use of Baltic Sea biological resources.
