Enabling comprehensive effective and efficient protection and restoration measures for a resilient Baltic Sea ecosystem

Time

1.6.2023–1.6.2028

Project coordinator

Åbo Akademi University

Funded by

  • EU Horizon 2020 (HORIZON-MISS-2022-OCEAN-01-01)
  • The PROTECT project takes a multi-avenue approach to addressing the degradation of coastal and marine habitats, including degraded seabed habitats. It develops, demonstrates and functions as the main leverage for implementing protection and restoration solutions in the Baltic Sea, across the full governance-designation-management protection and restoration structure.
The overall aim behind the work of PROTECT is to enable sufficient spatial protection and restoration of the marine environment to secure positive biodiversity outcomes, ensuring that the function of the ecosystem is maintained, thus securing production of ecosystems services and enabling sustainable use in both the short and long term.
