Students need to enroll as absent or present every academic year/semester. Without enrolling as present, you cannot participate in your studies and get your study credits registered. You also need to enroll as present or absent in order to keep your ÅAU username active.
Annual enrollment is for most students done via the enrollment service Oili. Newly admitted students enroll via Studyinfo.fi. Below you find detailed instructions on how to enroll. Bachelor’s and master’s students need to pay the obligatory membership fee to the student union in order to enroll as present (Universities Act 558/2009, 46§). The student union membership fee for the academic year 2024-2025 is 69 euros for bachelor’s and master’s students. For PhD students 64 euro per academic year.
Deadline for annual enrollment for the academic year 2024-2025 is 30 August at 15.00 (Helsinki time).
Deadline for enrollment for the spring semester 2025 is 10 January 2025 at 15.00 (Helsinki time).

General Principles
- You are a new student if you have been admitted to and accepted a new study entitlement this year
- If you do not enroll within the deadline, you lose your study entitlement in accordance with the Universities Act.
- When you enroll as present, you pay the Student Union fee. The fee is mandatory by law for all students studying for bachelors and masters programmes. Read more about the Student Union at Åbo Akademi University and the student union fee.
- Students studying for bachelors and masters programmes that are enrolled as present also pay the mandatory student health care fee. Read more about the health care fee.
Enrolling via Studyinfo.fi
- You can enroll as present via Studyinfo.fi at the same time as when you accept the study entitlement.
- If you want to enroll later after accepting the study entitlement, you will need Finnish online banking codes, a Finnish electronic ID-card or a mobile certificate in order access the Mystudyinfo.fi page and enroll.
- Before enrolling, make sure that you have paid your tuition fee, if you are liable for a tuition fee.
- You have to enroll before the enrollment deadline.
Enroll in person
- If you cannot enroll via Studyinfo.fi, you can enroll in person
- Contact the student service desk beforehand in order to get the payment details for the student union fee.
- Enrollment in person is possible from 1 of August until the enrollment deadline.
- Students at the campus in Turku enroll at the Student Service desk in Gripen, Hämeenkatu 13, 20500 Turku.
- Students at the campus in Vaasa enroll in Academill, Rantakatu 2, 65100 Vaasa.
- When enrolling in person, bring the following documents:
- ID (ID-card, passport, residence permit)
- Receipt for the Student Union fee. If payed with online banking, the receipt should have the filing number/archive code written on the receipt
- Your original bachelor’s degree certificate and transcript. These documents are submitted to the admissions office for verification, and will be given back to you. You do not need to submit your bachelor’s degree certificate if your degree is from Finland.
- Your letter of admission
- Receipt for your tuition fee, if you are liable to pay a tuition fee.
- If you are unable to arrive at Åbo Akademi University and enroll in person before the enrollment deadline due to problems with your residence permit or other reasons, please contact the Student Service desk.
Enrollment as absent
- As a newly admitted student, your right to enroll as absent is restricted by law. Your first year of study you can only enroll as absent for lawful reasons.
- The lawful reasons are:
- Service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service (194/1995)
- The student needs time off his/her studies to take care of a child in regard to the child’s birth or adoption (14.1.2022/52)
- The student cannot begin studies due to being incapacitated by personal illness or injury.
- After you have enrolled as absent in studieinfo.fi, you need to submit a certificate of your lawful absence. The certificates must be in Swedish, Finnish or English and you send them by e-mail to studinfo@abo.fi or by post to Student service desk, Gripen, Hämeenkatu 13, 20500 Turku.
- Send the certificate as quickly as possible after registration, but at the latest before the deadline for enrollment
- One of the following documents are needed:
- Military service/Non-Military Service:
- Call up order
- Conscript card
- A free form certificate from the Finnish Defence Forces
- Care of child:
- Kela’s certificate regarding maternity, paternity or parental allowance period or, if the certificate has not yet been received, a medical certificate regarding the pregnancy.
- Corresponding certificates from the authorities of other countries regarding statutory parental leave.
- Personal illness or injury:
- Sickness allowance decision or medical certificate. The certificate must state which illness or injury the student suffers from, and that this condition prevents the student from beginning their studies.
- Obstacles caused by the practical arrangements required by the illness or injury: an adequate clarification, e.g. a certificate from the student housing foundation that the student is on the waiting list for an apartment required by their injury.
- With the clarification, you need to show how the issue is being resolved. If the illness or injury is chronic, it is not enough to refer to the illness or injury alone, you need a temporary reason related to the illness or injury.
- The student’s own notification is not an adequate clarification.
- Did you accept your study entitlement last year and enroll as absent then? Enroll for this academic by following the instructions for annual enrollment for bachelors and master’s students.
- Military service/Non-Military Service:
- You are a new student if you have been admitted to and accepted a new study entitlement this year

- Enrollment for the spring semester opens in the beginning of December
- Enrollment is done for each study entitlement individually, so if you have multiple study entitlements you need to enroll for each of them.
- You can enroll as present or absent
- In order to enroll you need to:
- Have been enrolled as present or absent the previous semester
- Have study time left
- In case you are not sure in the autumn whether you would like to be enrolled as present or absent in the spring semester, we recommend that you enroll as absent for the spring semester at the same time as you enroll for the autumn semester.
- Enrollment as absent also needs to be done within deadline. You cannot study and get credits while enrolled as absent.

Enrolling via Oili
- Annual enrollment is done via the enrollment service Oili. Use your ÅAU username and password to log in.
- If the Oili enrollment does not work, the issue might be:
- You did not enroll previous semester – apply for re-entry
- Your study time has ended – apply for a study time extension
- You’re studying within an international master’s programme and are liable to pay a tuition fee before enrolling – contact the student service desk for payment information
- Your ÅAU user account has been deactivated – activate your ÅAU username
- Enrollment via Oili is registered in real time
- Unsure if you enrolled for the current academic year? You can check your enrollment status in the study planning tool Peppi by logging in and going to your profile and attendance data.
Enrolling in person
- If needed, you can enroll in person
- Contact or visit the student service desk in order to get payment details for the student union fee. Include your study right number in your request.
- In order to be enrolled as present you need to show the receipt for the student union fee before 15.00 (Helsinki time) on the last day of enrollment.
- You can send the receipt by email to studinfo@abo.fi or show the receipt at the student service desk.
- A pdf-receipt from your online bank is sufficient as long as the filing number/archive code is visible
- You can also enroll as absent in person by being in contact with the student service desk
Enrolling after lawful absence
- Your first year of study you can be enrolled as absent only due to lawful reasons. Lawful reasons are military- or non-military service, personal illness or injury or maternity, paternity or parental leave.
- In order to enroll as present after your being enrolled as lawfully absent:
- Activate your username and password
- Enroll via Oili – Note! Even if you have been absent your first year of study, you are not regarded as a new student and should choose the alternative “If you are a continuing student” in Oili.
- Find out who is your tutor and attend the study orientation week.
Exchange studies and studies abroad
- If you study abroad (exchange studies, language training, internship, research visit) as part of your degree, you need to be enrolled as present for the duration of your time abroad.
- Remember to enroll for the whole academic year.
- Also, remember to inform the International Office that you are studying abroad by filling out this form.
Change your enrollment
- If needed you can change your enrollment from absent to present and vice versa.
- Before the enrollment deadline you can change your enrollment as absent to present via Oili
- After the enrollment deadline, contact the studinfo@abo.fi to change your enrollment
- If you change your enrollment from present to absent you can during a window of time ask for a refund of your student union fee from ÅAS. Deadline to reclaim the student union fee is 30.9 for the whole academic year/autumn semester and 31.1 for the spring semester.
- You can no longer change your enrollment from present to absent if you have gotten course credits registered during the semester.

Newly admitted doctoral student
- When you get admitted, you are automatically enrolled as present for the current semester
- After the first semester, you need to enroll yourself as present or absent for each semster/academic year.
Enrolling via Oili
- Annual enrollment is done via the enrollment service Oili. Use your ÅAU username and password to log in.
- If the Oili enrollment does not work, the issue might be:
- You did not enroll previous semester – apply for re-entry
- Your ÅAU user account has been deactivated – activate your ÅAU username
- Your Finnish personal identity code is not registered in the student register – contact the student service desk.
- Enrollment via Oili is registered in real time
- Unsure if you enrolled for the current academic year? You can check your enrollment status in the study planning tool Peppi by logging in and going to your profile and attendance data.
Enrolling in person
- If needed, you can enroll in person
- Contact or visit the student service desk before the enrollment deadline for help with enrolling as present or absent. Remeber to state your student right number.
Membership in the student union
- When you enroll as present, you can choose to pay the membership fee to the student union.
- Membership in the student union is voluntary for doctoral students.
- You can pay the union fee in at the same time you enroll in Oili, or you can contact the student service desk for bank transfer details of the union fee.
- If you pay the union fee via bank transfer, you need to send a receipt for the payment to studinfo@abo.fi to have your membership registered.

Exchange studies and studies abroad
- If you study abroad (exchange studies, language training, internship, research visit) as part of your degree, you need to be enrolled as present for the duration of your time abroad.
- Remember to enroll for the whole academic year.
- Also, remember to inform the International Office that you are studying abroad by filling out this form.
Change your enrollment
- If needed you can change your enrollment from absent to present and vice versa.
- Before the enrollment deadline you can change your enrollment as absent to present via Oili
- After the enrollment deadline, contact the studinfo@abo.fi to change your enrollment
- You can no longer change your enrollment from present to absent if you have gotten course credits registered during the semester.
Incoming exchange students
- Incoming exchange students enroll in person at the start of their exchange
- In Turku, you enroll at the student service desk in Gripen. When you visit us to enroll, bring a photo ID (passport, driver’s license, residence permit, ID-card).
- In Vaasa you enroll with the exchange coordinator, bring photo ID to the enrollment.
- Exchange students do not need to pay the student union fee, but it is recommended since the fee entitles you to a student card that you can use to get a discount on student lunches as well as other discounts.
- In order to get your membership in the student union registered, bring the receipt for the student union fee to the student service desk or to the exchange coordinator.
- You can use a PDF-receipt form your online bank as the receipt. You do not need to have the receipt printed, a digital copy that you can show to the staff is sufficient.

Outgoing exchange students
- If you study abroad (exchange studies, language training, internship, research visit) as part of your degree, you need to be enrolled as present for the duration of your time abroad.
- Enroll as usual by following the instructions for bachelor and master’s students.
- Also, remember to inform the International Office that you are studying abroad by filling out this form.
- If you study on an extra study right for additional studies after graduation, you will automatically be registered for the semester you are granted your extra study right.
- As a student on an extra study right for additional studies after graduation, you do not pay a union fee, as the studies do not entitle you to student discounts
- You who study on an extra study right for additional studies after graduation must register before each academic year/semester.
- You register by contacting studinfo@abo.fi before the deadline for academic year registration.
