Re-entry and additional study time

Re-entry and additional study time

If you have not enrolled the academic year (enrollment as present or absent) for the current academic year by the enrollment deadline, you must apply for re-entry. A request for re-entry means that you apply to be enrolled as present or absent for the academic year after the enrollment deadline has already passed.

If your study time has ended and you want to complete your studies, you need to apply for extra study time. You can apply for extra study time during the same semester as your study time ends, or later when you are ready to complete your studies. Apply for extra study time only when you are in a place to study actively and complete your studies.

A processing fee of 50 euros is charged for the application. The fee must be paid before your application is processed. If you apply for re-entry and extra study time at the same time, you only pay the processing fee once.

Until 31 December 2024 you apply for re-entry here and apply additional study time here.

You need to request for re-entry if you are

  • a bachelor’s student
  • a master’s student
  • a doctoral researcher

and you have missed the annual enrollment deadline, or you are not enrolled on your study right.

If you belong to one of the following student groups, you do not need to apply for re-entry:

  • Cross-studies students
  • Extra students
  • Incoming exchange students
  • JOO-students
  • Open university students
  • Psychotherapy students
  • Students in specialization programmes
  • Students with an additional right to study after graduation

If you are not registered as attending for the academic year, contact your contact person at Åbo Akademi University or contact the student office.

  • The request for re-entry is specific for each study right, so if you have several study rights you want to be re-enrolled in at the same time, you must fill out the request form and pay the processing fee for each study right
  • In the request, use an email address you have access to. If you don’t have access to your abo.fi email address, please choose a different email address.
  • Check that you have enough study time, either in the study planning tool peppi or by contacting the student office.
  • In order for your re-entry to be approved, you need to have study time left.
    • If you do not have any study time left, you can apply for additional study time at the same time and in the same form as you apply for re-entry. You only pay one processing fee if you apply for re-entry and additional study time at the same time. You find the link to the form at the top of this page.
  • Fill in the request form for re-entry and pay the processing fee. Attach a receipt or order confirmation of the paid fee to your request.
    • Your request will not be processed until you have paid the processing fee.
  • If you have been non-registered for more than one academic year, you need to write a short motivation for your request and attach a plan for your studies or research.
  • If necessary, contact your study advisors for help with a study plan or contact Research Services for help with a research plan

After you have submitted the request:

  • Wait for your request to be processed by the student office. At the beginning of the semesters, the processing time is a little longer, as many requests are received at the same time.
  • If you have been unregistered for more than a year, your request will be processed by the study advisors or Research Services, and the processing time will be longer.
  • Once your request has been processed and approved, you will be contacted with information on how to be registered as present or absent.
  • Follow the instructions you receive in the reply email to your request.
  • After you have been registered as present or absent, your user account (ÅAU email and username) is usually reactivated automatically within a couple of hours. If your user account is still not usable, check that you have completed the information security test and contact helpdesk@abo.fi if necessary.

You apply for extra study time if you:

  • a bachelor’s student
  • a master’s student

and your study time will soon run out or has already run out.

If you belong to one of the following student groups, you do not need to request additional study time:

  • Doctoral researchers
  • Cross-studies students
  • Extra students
  • Incoming exchange students
  • JOO-students
  • Open university students
  • Psychotherapy students
  • Students in specialization programmes
  • Students with an additional right to study after graduation

You can see the end date of your study right in the study planning tool peppi. If you still have questions about your study time duration, you can contact the student service desk.

When the study time is finishing you can apply for an extension of the study time if you during the studies have been absent for a lawful reason, but have not submitted certificates of this.

The application for an extension of the study time is done at the Student Service Desk by handing in a certificate proving the lawful absence. You do not need to fill in a specific form.

Lawful absence: Absence because of service in accordance with the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service (194/1995), or maternity, paternity or parental leave.

  • Submit the certificate proving the lawful absence in conjunction with registering as absent. This way your study time will be automatically extended with the amount of terms you register as absent.
  • If you did not submit your certificate in conjunction with the registration you can apply for an extension of the study time even later. The application is submitted to the Student Service Desk and a certificate proving service in accordance with the Conscription Act (1438/2007), or maternity, paternity or parental leave is attached to the application. If you for example have been registered as present during the time you have been on parental leave you still have the right to extend your study time.
  • Please note that childcare leave does not give you a right to lawful absence.

  • Request for additional study time only when you have the motivation for studies and the possibility to complete your degree.
  • If you intend to continue your studies immediately the following semester after your study time has run out, request for additional study time well in advance before the start of the next semester.
  • If you want to make sure that your request will be processed in time for the autumn semester, please fill in and submit the request form with the attached study plan before mid-June.
  • In the request, use an email address you have access to. If you don’t have access to your abo.fi email address or possibly will lose access, use another email address.
  • The request for additional study time is made per study right, so if you have several study rights for which you want to be granted additional study time at the same time, you must make a separate request and pay the processing fee for each study right.
  • You can request for additional study time at the same time and in the same form as you request for re-entry. You will find a link to the form at the top of this page.
  • Fill in the request for additional study time and pay the processing fee. Attach a receipt or order confirmation of the paid fee to your request form.
    • Your request will not be processed until you have paid the processing fee.
  • You need to write a short motivation for your request and attach a plan of your studies or research and how you intend to complete your studies.
  • If necessary, contact your study advisors for help with a study plan or research services for help with a research plan

After you have submitted the request:

  • Wait for your request to be processed. At the beginning of the semesters, the processing time is a little longer, as many requests are received at the same time.
  • For your first request for additional study time, if it is approved, you will always be granted 4 semesters of additional study time. If you need to apply for additional study time again and your application is granted, a decision on the amount of study time granted will be made based on your motivation and how much time is needed to complete your degree.
