All degree students at Åbo Akademi University are eligible to apply for exchange programs at our partner universities in Central and South America, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. The exchange agreements are general, meaning students from all fields of study can apply for these exchange opportunities. University-specific criteria are listed under each respective partner institution.
When applying for an exchange program at one of ÅAU’s partner universities in Central and South America, you can choose to apply for one semester, an academic year, or a South American academic year (calendar year).
First, you submit your application in ÅAU’s internal application round and upload all necessary documents for studies in Central and South America;
- Transcript of Records in English
- Study plan
- Proof of Language Proficiency in Spanish (Portuguese for Brazil), language requirements are listed under each host university.
- CEFR B1 = at least Level 3 completed at the Language Centre
- CEFR B2 = at least Level 4 completed at the Language Centre
- Motivation Letter, written in the teaching language of the host university, maximum 1 page
- Recommendation letters are only required at Javeriana Cali
The application deadline is on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 15:00.
Once nominated, you must submit an additional application directly to the host university according to their instructions. This application may require additional documents, which will be listed under each university.
Studying in Central and South America requires a visa and comprehensive insurance. More information can be found under “Useful Advice before the Exchange”.

Information about host cities, brochures, videos, and all other kinds of materials are available for all partner institutions upon request. Student feedback on exchange studies in Central and South America is not available in SoleMOVE, but feedback forms are available in Gripen and upon request.
In 2008, ÅAU signed a new bilateral exchange agreement with Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The university is private and has approximately 20,000 students. The main campus is located in central Buenos Aires, while additional campuses are in Pilar and Gobernador Virasoro.
The agreement requires a balance between incoming and outgoing students. Exchange students can take courses across various faculties. The course offerings can be found here, listed with every subject area. Some courses are also offered in English, mostly within Economic subjects.
If you wish to take courses that span the entire academic year (March-November), approval from the academic coordinator at the faculty is required. For master’s level courses or courses in economics, approval from the academic coordinator at the faculty is also needed. The faculties of medicine (including speech therapy) and law are not open to exchange students. The minimum number of courses for exchange students is 5, and 75% attendance is mandatory.
Interested students first apply internally in ÅAU’s application round. Nominated students will then gain access to USAL’s electronic application system. The USAL application requires the following documents in PDF or JPG format:
- Transcript of records in English
- List of courses at USAL included in the approved study plan
- Passport copy (passport must be valid for 6 months after the exchange ends)
- Motivation letter in Spanish (max. 250 words)
- The medical form of USAL
- The Spanish level form of USAL
- Migratory Commitment of USAL

Universidade de São Paulo
In 2009, a bilateral exchange agreement was signed with Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil’s largest university with approximately 100,000 students. The main campus is located in various areas of São Paulo and offers courses across all subject areas. The São Carlos campus primarily offers courses in natural sciences, while the Ribeirão Preto campus provides courses in law, economics, and philosophy.
Exchange students may take courses across different faculties but must remain at the same campus. Master’s level students are advised to pursue bachelor’s-level studies at USP. The course offerings can be found here.
Interested students should first apply internally in ÅAU’s application round. Nominated students will then gain access to USP’s electronic application system. In addition to the study plan, the following documents are required for the USP application:

USP offers interested students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the university and the city of São Paulo through their online course, VIVA USP, which describes what exchange students can expect upon arrival.
USP also organizes summer studies within the USP Academy programme. Participation is at the student’s own expense, and the application deadline for summer 2024 courses is May 30.

Universidad de Talca
In 2008, ÅAU signed its first student exchange agreement with a Chilean university, Universidad de Talca. The university is relatively small, with approximately 12,000 students. Talca is about 250 km south of the capital, Santiago. The main campus in Talca is compact and modern, offering courses in most subject areas. There are also 4 other campuses (Curicó, Lineares, Pehuenche, Santiago) with a more limited course selection.
Studies at Talca are best suited for ÅAU students in social sciences, natural sciences, chemical engineering, and psychology. The offer of study programmes on bachelor level is wide and the course list is found under each study programme. The syllabi are also available for every course. On the webpages for the master’s programmes and PhD programmes there is a course list for each respective programme.
Interested students should first apply internally in ÅAU’s application round. Nominated students will need to complete the application form for UTalca. In addition to the study plan, the following documents are required for UTalca’s application:

ÅAU students have been able to study abroad at Universidad Diego Portales since 2012. The private university was founded in 1982 and has approximately 18,000 students. The campus is centrally located in the Chilean capital, Santiago de Chile.
The course offerings can be found under each study programme and some courses are also offered in English. Exchange students can take courses across various faculties. Speech therapy is not offered as a subject.
Interested students should first apply internally in ÅAU’s application round. Nominated students must complete the application form for UDP. In addition to the study plan, the following documents are required for UDP’s application:

Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá
Since 2008, ÅAU students have had the opportunity to go on exchange to Bogotá, Colombia. Our partner is Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, a private university with approximately 30,000 students.
The university offers courses across all subject areas (except for Speech Therapy), and exchange students can take courses from various faculties. Javeriana provides instructions on how to find courses in their database (also available in English upon request). (In the database, the first semester’s courses are labeled as “primer periodo” and the second semester’s courses as “tercer periodo”). Some courses are also offered in English, primarily for students in economic subjects. Master’s level business and administration courses are not available for exchange students.
Full-time studies at Javeriana are equivalent to 17 credits per semester. 1 credit at PUJ converts to 1,8 ECTS at ÅAU.
Javeriana has a tutor programme for incoming exchange students.

Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali
ÅAU’s newest bilateral exchange agreement in South America was signed in 2024 with Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali in Colombia. Javeriana Cali is a private university with approximately 8 500 students and the campus is located in Cali.
The university offers courses across most subject areas (except for Speech Therapy), and exchange students can take courses from various faculties. The course list is available under every study programme. Some courses are also offered in English, primarily for students in economic subjects. Javeriana Cali has an AACSB accredited business school and four ADET accredited engineering programmes.
Full-time studies at Javeriana Cali are equivalent to 17 credits per semester. 1 credit at PUJ converts to 1,8 ECTS at ÅAU, e.g. a 3 credit course at Javeriana cali is converted to 5 credits at ÅAU.
Javeriana has a tutor programme for incoming exchange students.

ÅAU signed an agreement with Tec de Monterrey in the fall of 1998. As Mexico’s top-ranked private university, it has 25 different campuses.
Among them, Monterrey and Querétaro offer the most courses in English, while Santa Fe only offers Business studies for exchange students. Exchange students can also study in the capital, Ciudad de México, and in Guadalajara. Exchange students can take courses from various faculties located on the same campus.
The course list is available here along with other useful information. Attendance at classes is mandatory. Most subject areas are available at Tec, but Speech Therapy is not offered. Courses at the faculty of medicine (including psychology and some courses in biological sciences) must be approved by the faculty.
At Tec, 1 credit equals 1,67 ECTS; full-time studies for one semester correspond to 18 credits at Tec.

Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú
Since 2004, ÅAU students have been able to study abroad for one or two semesters to the Peruvian capital, Lima. PUCP is a private university founded in 1917 and has approximately 23,000 students.
The university offers courses in all subject areas. The course list can be found here. Mandatory courses are available each semester, while elective courses have limited availability. Attendance on courses is mandatory.
Exchange students can take courses from different faculties, but some courses may be unavailable due to a lack of available spots. Courses in master’s programs and courses at the Faculty of Performing Arts and Faculty of Communication must be approved by PUCP’s academic coordinator.
1 credit at PUCP is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS for bachelor’s level courses and 2.5 ECTS for master’s level courses. For bachelor’s studies, students should have 20 credits at PUCP in their study plan, and for master’s studies, they should have 12 credits at PUCP to correspond to 30 ECTS/full-time studies at ÅAU.
PUCP offers a tutor programme for incoming exchange students.

Universidad de la República
In 2008, a bilateral exchange agreement was signed with Universidad de la República, located in Montevideo. The university is the biggest in Uruguay and has approximately 60,000 students.
Exchange students can take courses at different faculties, but all courses must be pre-approved by the respective faculty. The course offerings can be found here.
Interested students must first apply internally in ÅAU’s application round. Once nominated, students must fill out UdelaR’s application form. In addition to the study plan, the following documents are required for applying to UdelaR:

ÅAU first sent students to Venezuela in the fall of 1999. Universidad Simón Bolivar is situated in a scenic area south of Caracas and has around 10,000 students. The studies in Venezuela are best suited for ÅAU students in natural sciences and chemical engineering.
