Bio-CLC: Chemical-Looping Combustion (CLC) captures CO2 by separating it from other gases in the combustion process, which eliminates the need for costly and energy demanding CO2 separation later. Chemical-Looping Combustion of biomass (BioCLC) would allow biomass-burning operators to achieve not just neutral, but negative CO2 emissions – taking it out of the atmospheric cycle and thereby helping to combat climate change.
The goal of the Negative CO2 project is to develop a technology that enables CO2 capture and negative CO2 emissions with the lowest possible cost and energy penalty. To reach this goal the following activities are undertaken: pilot plant operation; reserach on oxygen carrier materials; flue gas treatment technologies; ash and corrosion issues; and upscaling and implementation. In this project Åbo Akademi University focuses mainly on understanding interactions between biomass ash and bed materials and on the selection of heat transfer surface materials.
